BRITISH FINANCE BILL

LABOUR MOTION REJECTED. CRITICISM OF GIL TAX. Received May 18, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, Al ay 18. In the Houso of Commons a Labour motion for the rejection of tho Finance Bill on the grounds that it left the heaviest burdens on those least able to bear them, was defeated. Air. Chamberlain, in reply to some Conservative opposition to the taxation on heavy oils as a burden on industry, said that if, as suggested, there was a general desire for a substitution of a tax on foreign sugar or tea, he would sympathetically consider it. The Bill was read a second time by 368 votes to 48.
