PROPOSED OBSERVATORY THE FRO J EST POSTPONED. [ Per Presa Association. 1 WELLINGTON May 18. The New Zealand Institute discussed a recommendation from a committee to use the funds available from the Carter Bequest for tho purpose of erecting an observatory in the Botanical Gardens at a cost of approximately £3OOO, and the purchasing from tho Citv Council of a telescope at a cost of £5OO. It was stated that tho fund now amounted to £9OOO and was growing at tho rate of about £4OO a year. The bequest also provided for a professor and staff, but it would be another 20 vears before tho testator’s wishes could bo fully realised. Tho committee recommended that tho institute proceed with the part of the scheme which could be accomplished. Professor Segar said it would bo bettor to wait for 20 years and do something worth while The matter was referred to tho standing committee for a further report, tho committee’s recommendation not being adopted.
