TEACHER PROBLEM

NO WORK FOR EX STUDENTS. SCHEME FOR RATIONING. AUCKLAND, May 17. The Board is gravely concerned at the very considerable and increasing number of ex-students of the Training College who are unable to obtain employment, says the chairman of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. T. U. Wells, in his report prepared for the Minister of Education. The report states that at th e begin (ring of last year there were over 50(1 •x-students awaiting employment and :here appeared little prospect of fie position being relieved for some time. In view of the very acute position that had arisen the Board had co-oper-ated in the scheme instituted by the Department for the rationing of employment among ex-students of the Training College. The scheme, of course, had its disadvantages owing to the changes in relieving teachers employed at the schools. During last year employment as relieving tcaehe:.- had been given only to ex-students nf the Training College, of whom 90 per cent, had retemporary work for at least two Terms. The Board regrets, however, that, under the rationing scheme, it was not possible to give a full year’s employment, as probationary assistants ;o those students who completed their •ourse at the Training College at the •nd of 1931. Such employment was <iven to ex-students in previous vears ind was regarded as their final year jf training.
