ON TARANAKI TRACKS

PREPARING FOR WANGANUI. THE FINAL GALLOPS. Nearly all the Taranaki horses for Wanganui did their final trials on Tuesday morning, states the Taranaki Daily News. Both at Hawera and at New Plymouth the going was slow after the recent rains, but at New Plymouth the conditions were slightly better. Track work at Hawera was conducted in overcast weather. The going was good on tho course proper and as the pegs wore closer to the rails than usual the times recorded for the morning’s work were faster than for *somc time. La Crown (W. E. Pine) dashed over five furlongs in Im. 6 4-ss. This mare has been hitting out in great style during the last few weeks. Tentcall (G. Duncan) and Awaken (W. E. Pine) were on terms all the way over a mile, the last six furlongs of which, occupied Im. 25 3-ss. Tentcall appeared to bo going the better at the finish. Gibraltar (Duncan), Attentive (Feasey) and Carfcx (Vaughan) were associated over a similar journey. Gibraltar tailed off early and after running tho first half-mile in 55 l-5s completed the distance in Im. 51 l-ss. Carfex was a neck in front of Attentive with Gibraltar about three lengths further back. Both Carfex and Attentive went well. Gibraltar was finishing on in the straight after being a long way behind over tho early stages. Aga .Khan (Feasey) and Diagano (Dun'can) hopped off from the seven furlong peg. The first half mile was encompassed in 54 3-sscc when Diagano was pulled up. Aga Khan went on alono to register 1.374. Aga Khan worked freely. Green Linnet (Duncan). March Alone (Sheild) and Weatherzane (Feasey) were in line at the winning post after running five furlongs in 1.7|. Wcatherzano did well to finish on terms with his more experienced opponents. Green Linnet, however, appeared to have something in reserve. Later, with W. Grindlay up. she was schooled over three fences, jumping proficiently. The Tiger (Cochrane) did not put the pace on until the last three furlongs of a round. Instalment (Brough) returned 54 4-5 sec for half a mile. Little Doubt (Coyle) was in the lead for the greater part of seven furlongs in company with Davistock (W. E. Pine). The latter just headed the Antagonist gelding at the close in 1.37 1-5. Little Doubt hit out boldlv and continues to improve. As usual Davistock worked pleasingly. The main plough was fit for pacework and was in most demand. Those to work on it were Chief Line. Haunui. Peschiorfi, Round Table and Copey. Rapper was exercised on the inside plough. At New Plymouth few of the horses claim immediate engagements and there was not a great deal of fast work. What galloping there was took place on the course proper with the flags well out. Royal Bengal and Arvada were associated over five furlongs in 1.10. Both hit out freely, with Royal Bengal doing a little bettor than his companion at the finish. Lucky Alice struck herself slightly the other morning but the trouble is not. serious. She was out doing pace work on the inner grass. Lady Quex was sent seven furlongs. She took Im. 4s. for the first five and 1.394 fnr the full distance tho last half mile taking 564. ENGAGEMENTS DECLINED LATEST SCRATCHINGS. Three more scratchings have been made since the defection of Ganpat and White Fang on Tuesday, though fields have not been materially weakened except in the case of Omeo’s withdrawal from the Grandstand Steeplechase. Crown Link was scratched for the Balgownie Hack Handicap at 1.18 p.m. yesterday, leaving nine in that race. The scratching of Tangahoc from the Borough Hack ifandicap at 7.30 p.m. yesterday leaves fourteen engaged. Omeo was withdrawn from the Grandstand Steeplechase at 8.50 p.m. yesterday, but if tho five remaining in go to the post there will still be a dividend for supporters of tho second horse. TEA TRADER AMISS LAME AFTER WORK-OUT. SPECIAL RACE CANCELLED. Received May 17, 9.20 p.m. SAN BRUNO (Cal.) May 16. The special race between Tea Trader and Sundot, scheduled for Saturday, was cancelled to-day when the New Zealand horse pulled up lame after a work-out.
