AUSTRALIAN INTEREST NO CONVERSION SAVING GOVERNMENT ATTACKED MR. SCULUN’S CRITICISM (By Telegraph Press Association Copy right) Received May 17, IL3 p.m. CANBERRA, May 17. Mr. J. H. Scull in, Leader of the Opposition in the Houie of Representatives, to-day attacked the Government for its failure to achieve a reduction in interest on the Australian loan iadebtedness in Britain. He cited’ the success of the recent British conversions and Indian loan, illustrating that there was no shortage of money, and declared that Australian people were entitled to relief. He added that Ausnalia’s annual interest bill was £35.(100,000 because she was paying between 5 and 61 per cent, interest. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, i eplied that the Government had done everything possible to bring about a conversion through‘the Resident Minister in London, but events would now have to take their course until after the World Economic Conference.
