ELECTRIC-LIGHT BALL

FESTIVITY AT PATEA. PLUNKET SOCIETY BENEFITS. Undeterred by the rain, a large crowd of dancers attended the annual ball held by the Batea branch of the Plunkct Society on Tuesday evening. There were dancers present from Wanganui, Hawera, Waverlcy and Eltham, and not until nearly three o’clock in tho morning did they dare the weather again for their homeward journeys. Some 180 couples occupied the floor, where not only the new fox-trots and waltzes were indulged in, but several of the old-timers, such as the military two-step, lancers, and the old waltz. Electric lighting was featured a great deal in the decoration of the Patetu Town Hall. Red lights formed a iftTgo star in the centre of tho ceiling, from which radiated streamers of different coloured lights, while others decorated the edge of the dress circle. Above the heads of the orchestra on tho stage were more and large lights in different colours depicting yie word “welcome.” Toi-tois, chrysanthemums and autumn foliage had been arranged around the walls of the hall and stage. In the supper room, yellow chrysanthemums and autumn foliage, particularly sprays of red Virginia creeper, decorated the tables. As an interlude to the programme of dancing, several exhibitions of sabaret and ballroom dancing were given. Three cabaret dances were given by pupils of Miss Margaret Stock, of Hawera. A Spanish tambourine dancer, a skipping dancer, and “Harlequin and Columbine” were most appreciably applauded and encored several times. Miss E. Wright and partner, of Wanganui, wcro watched with deep interest and appreciation of their graceful execution of tho quickstep and 1932 waltz, and were applauded time and again. Music from the eight instruments of Wills’ Orchestra, of Hawera, supplied all that was required by the dancers, and by their old-time and modern tunes added a great deal to the enjoyment and success of the ball. The activities of the M’s.C., Messrs. A. Maxwell and J. Sheahan, also was another fact which tended greatly towards the thorough enjoyment of everyone, it being noticeable that no one was left sitting out for a dance. Up in the supperroom, every arrangement was carried through capably and without a hitch, everyone having plenty of the excellent savoury supper. The president and vice-presidents were in charge of this branch, with the help of the willing committee members. But to tho whole management of the ball, credit must be given to the secretary, Mrs. L. Honey field, and the vice-president, Mrs. R. W.
