They are now heavily bombarding Kupcikow I’asw, also East. Lu an ho. BATTLE AT CHIENAN JAPANESE REPORTS SHANGHAI, May 9. Japanese reports state that as the result of the battle of Chienan, the Japanese suffered 100 casualties, while the Chinese lost 1500, being the hot test battle since the latest drive commenced. A Japanese brigade captured Chienan on Monday and arc now pushing towards Luanchow. Japanese ’planes are bombing Feng yun, twenty miles north of Tongshan, whore important British coal mines arc situated. FORGING AHEAD JAPANESE OFFENSIVE. Received Mav 10, 11.5 p.m. SHANGHAI, May 10. Chinese reports state that the Japanese are forging ahead with the latest offensive. Following the Chinese withdrawal, the Japanese reached Changli last night, their armoured train later reaching Houfengtai, where it was unable to proceed owing to the destruction of the railway bridge. Large bodies of Chinese troops are concentrating on the west bank of the Luan River, though evacuating Lulung and Funing, where the Japanese repeatedly bombed, inflicting severe casualties.
