WANGANUI ASSOCIATION THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. KING’S BIRTHDAY TOURNEY. A decision to run a tournament on the King’s Birthday holiday, Saturday, June 3, was made at the recent meeting of the Wanganui Hockey Association’s executive committee. The ladies’ teams will be seven-a-sidc and the men’s livc-a-side. It is reported that the Tournament Committee has tho matter well in hand and no effort is being spared to ensure a successful day. It is estimated that no fewer than 40 teams will be competing, and in order to carry this programme of approximately 70 matches through it will be necessary to start at 9 a.m. Each team entering the competition will be guaranteed at least three games and silver trophies will be presented to the winners of the respective sections. Full programmes and entry forms have been forwarded to club secretaries and all club members are urged to give this tournament their wholehearted support. The committee regretted that, despite repeated warnings and tho notices at Gonville Park, numerous persons make use of this ground for the purpose of having practices in all classes of sport on Sundays. Tho Hockey Association views with strong disfavour the breaking of the city bylaws and the detrimental effect such play is haying on the playing areas. The council is beig interviewed with a view to taking action against such offenders. The position of officer-in-charge of matches for the rest of the season has been filled by the appointment of Mr. F. G Wilson. A challenge has been received from the Feilding Association for the V. F. Winter Shield. This matter has been held over pending th e receipt of the shield from Palmerston North. The committee set up to draft the new rules tabled same but owing to pressure of business there was not enough time to go through the rules. This matter will be attended to at an early date.
