OBITUARY
MR C. A. L. BULLIVANT After a painful illness Mr Claude Albany Leopold Bullivant passed away at the Wanganui Public Hospital early yesterday morning. Mr Bullivant was the Child Welfare Officer in Wanganui and was widely known for his geniality and friendly disposition. lie tfag a fine all-round sport and excelled at swimming, fishing and shooting. Born in Christchurch 49 years ago, he lived in that city until 1913, when he joined the Education Department. He was transferred to Nelson, then to Wellington, back to Nelson again, afterwards coming to Wanganui, where he arrived three years ago. In his capacity as Welfare Officer he did splendid work in putting many a recalcitrant boy on tho straight and narrow path to finally see him grow up a decent. honest citizen. Firm but kind to all lads placed under his control, his heart and soul being in their welfare, he never forgot when young that he was far from a perfect boy himself, and realised that kindness goes a long way further in helping to reform a wayward lad than harsh methods. Mr Bullivant was a great reader and deep thinker in things that mattered in this life for mankind. A firm believer in eugenics, he often remarked that he would like to live for the day when some big, strong, fearless man would grapple with the problem of the unfit being allowed to many. He felt not until then would wo produce a. race both physically and mentally strong, and also lessen inmates in hospitals, asylums, and gaols. His sphere of life gave him this vision that some needed reform was wanted in this direction. Thirty years ago Mr Bullivant was one of the Dominion’s leading swimmers. His son followed in his footsteps and represented Wanganui at the recent New Zealand championships.
Mr Bullivant was cut off in the noon of his life by a malady which ha < = science baffled up to the present, and by his death Wanganui has lost a good citizen and a man of the highest in tegritr.
