WANGANUI ASSOCIATION SATURDAY'S GAMES Three senior grade matches wore played in the men’s section uf the Wanganui Hockey Association’s competitions on Saturday and all produced even contests. The ladies played practice games only for grading purposes. The grounds were m fair order but the heavy rain had made them somewhat; heavy and trie surface was not good and cut up quickly. The bumpy turf brought about much m<s hitting and over-running of the ball The standard of play suffered in consequence. Old Boys and Y.M.C.A. This game was given pride o£ place on No. 1 ground. It was unfortunate that Y.M.C.A. wore unable to field a full complement of players owing to a misunderstanding regarding the starting time. They played the first, spell two players short, but were reinforced by one at half-time. After an even start Old Boys superior numbers began to give them the advantage. Several good combined forward rushes took place and Y.M. saved goals only by a resolute defence in which D. Howatson was prominent. Old Boys were also losing chances through over-eagerness and off-side play cost them several penalties. Eventually a left-wing attack saw tho ball swung across the goal mouth and Russell came in from the right to score a neat goal. . The next score was from a scramble in the goal mouth, Mclntyre placing the ball m the net. A high centering pass from Wallace was well taken by Moosman. who scored from the circle edge. Jus before the interval Wallace added a fourth point from a combined forward rush.—Old Boys 4, Y.M.C.A. 0. The second spell was ‘very much, a repetition of tho first, OM Boys doing nearly all the attacking. The Y.M.C.A. defence was even more stubborn, however, and Old Boys failed to add to their score. On tne other hand Y.M.C.A. were able to open their ao count. On one of their attacks a free hit was awarded just outside the circle and Old Boys failed to clear smartly., D. Howatson followed in and shot a smart goal. The game ended with the

score: Old Boys 4, Y.M.C.A- 1. Messrs. Hasell and Tizard were TOiorees. Star and Wesley Wesley were at first short-handed, but filled up the places with juniors. Star had tho better of the opening exchanges and were tho first to score through the medium of Latham. Play was very ragged ana uneven and though willing, displayed little combined work. Shortly before tho interval a pass from N. Barlow was onlj partially cleared by Hasler and Thrush, taking tho rebound, put it into the net. . In the second spell Star again took tho lead as the result of a really fine goal by Rich. In the closing stages Wesley rallied and after a series of penalty corners Greenfield found the net with a fast shot. The game thus ended: Wesley 2, Star 2. Messrs. Tizard and Hasell were the referees. Hinemoa and Tech, College It was evident from the start that Technical were out to play a defensive game and play settled in their half of tho ground. The Hinemoa backs ’were able to repulse the desultory attacks by the school team. Much scrambling play was in evidence, the Hinemoa forwards being unable to penetrate the spirited though unorthodox defence. Finally Pengclly fastened on to a weak clearance aud scored from close range. The second goal was a better effort, a combined movement giving Pengclly his chance to add a second point. Hinemoa were not making an impressive showing. Though on the attack almost continuously, the forwards could make no impression on the opposing defence. Bunching and scrambling play produced no results. Occasionally Tech. College made sorties to the other end but could not sustain the attacks, this appearing to be due to the failure of the half-backs to provide a second line to the attack. Eventually Hinemoa added another goal, Pul! being the scorer. Shortly afterwards Hutchens was successful in finding the net for Tech. There was no further scoring and the game ended: Hinemoa 3, Tech. College 1. Messrs. Adams and Spurdie were the referees.
