MEAT EXPORT CONTROL

MEASURE IN AUSTRALIA. An important discussion was reached recently when, at a conference of representatives of the meat industry from all States, held at Melbourne, the formation of a Commonwealth meat council was agreed to. The Commonwealth Government will be asked to submit the question of forming such a council to a producers’ pool and if a majority vote is Obtained it is possible that legislation necessary to give the council standing will be introduced into the Commonwealth Parliament.

The principal functions of the council would bo to fix and enforce standards for the grading of all meat intended for export, to regulate the shipping of meat, and to supervise and lay down regulations for the sale and marketing of meat overseas. If tho appointment of a council on the lines laid down is affirmed 16 individuals armed with plenty of powers would control the meat industry of Australia, and could, if they so desired, adopt coercive and compulsory measures to enforce their will upon producers. The necessity for regulating tho export and marketing of Australian meat has for long been obvious. The haphazard methods that have obtained in the past, and still obtain, will have to be scrapped and better ones substituted. In order to gain a leading position in overseas markets ways and means of creating and maintaining a demand will have to be devised. This is being done by other meat exporting countries, and Australia is convinced, sho must fall into line.
