NEW SCALE OF PAT. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, May 5. Following a fully attended meeting of shipowners this morning a statement was issued to the Press which, after setting out the position leading up to / rhe present position, says that the shipowners, in view of the rejection of their proposals, now intend to engage labour for manning ships on the conditions agreed upon with the union executive. but including a 5 per cent, re* duction on the rates ruling up the end of last month. The rates now proposed, compared with Australian rates are: Boatswain, 1930: £l6 4s, less 15 per cent, equal to £l3 15s 6d: Australian rate. £l2 14s 3d. Able seaman. 1930: £l5 4s, less 15 per eent, equal to £l2 15s 6d; Australian rate, £ll 16s 3d. Ordinary seaman, 1930: £lO 9s, less 15 oer cent, £8 17s 6d; Australian rate, £7 8s 6d. Fireman, 1930: £l7 4s, less 15 per cent, equal £l4 15s 6d; Australian rate, £l3 12s 3d. Trimmer, 1930: £l5 4s less 15 per sent, equal to £l2 15s 6d; Australian rate, £ll 16s 3d. Note: In addition to these rates the seamen are “found” aboard the ship. Crews of all vessels will be paid off as the vessels reach their homo porta, or convenient main ports, and, thereafter, fresh erew will be engaged on the new conditions and at the foregoing rates of pay. In the case of vessels which are now in ports other than their home ports the proposal has been made to the Union that the vessel should proceed direct to its home port under the conditions ruling prior to i, and should there be paid off.
