CHARGES AT WELLINGTON. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, May 5. Arthur Vowles, described as a stew* ard, was to-day fined £2O on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and was given a month to find the money. On charges of using the bar of the Clarendon Hotel as a. common gaming house and carrying on business as a bookmaker, Michael John O’Halloran, barman, was further remanded. When the police executed the warrant issued under the terms of the Gaming Act they found an automatic pistol in O’Halloran’s pocket. He pleaded guilty to being unlawfully in possession, and for this was fined £4, and the pistol was confiscated. On the gaming charge O’Halloran elected trial by jury.
