WATERS RECEDING
RIVER’S LEVEL FALLS FEATHERSTON’S PUNT LOCATED. The flooded waters of the Wanganui River decreased yesterday, despite the heavy shwoers which fell throughout the day, and its level was not as high last evening as it was on Thursday. Reports from Pipiriki state that the river fell 20 feet there yesterday. The River Services Steamer made a fast trip down in the morning and arrived at Wanganui from Pipiriki an hour earlier than usual.
Featherston’s punt, which was washed away from To Rimu on Thurs day morning, was recovered by Messrs. Hatherly and Rhodes up near the red light at Landguard Bluff last night. Bits and pieces of pontoons and bridges have been observed but the bridge which wag seen on Thursday has not been noticed again.
A further slip has been reported on the River Road two miles above Upokougaro, but it is not serious. Its occurrence has been expected for some time as there is a spring in the vicinity. A number of slips has also been reported on the Waitotara Valley Road, but it is stated that they are not seri-
ous and are not blocking the road. Work of clearing the spoil caused by a fall of earth near the Aberfeldie Hill was proceeded with yesterday and cars are able to pass. Up to the present time few reports of slips have been made, but it is anticipated that should the rain continue there will be the usual ‘crop. ” Speaking to the stationmaster at Wanganui yesterday a “Chronicle” reporter was told that further rain might cause blockages on the railway.
