GRAND CONCERT. PRESENTED BY TAIRAPE ENTERTAINERS. A grand concert in aid of the funds of the Taihape District High Schoo] was presented in the Town Hall on Thursday evening by the Taihape Entertainers. A bright programme skilfully arranged by Air. E. E. Smith, was presented, and each item was received with loud and sustained applause. The whole show went with a swing from start to. finish and reflected great credit on all concerned, especially Air E. E. Smith, who had devoted much rime and energy to the task of organisation. The programme opened with an overture by the orchestra. The next item was a dance gracefully executed by Misses S. and G. Reid, of Utiku. “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” was sung by the company, this number being followed by a pianoforte duet by Miss G. Janies and Air. F. Andrews A vocal solo by Aliss O’Brien to the accompaniment of music from a banjo played by Air. R. AlcCarthy, was enthusiastically encored. Aliss Q’Brien was supported by a chorus. Mr. Hayes “brought the house down” with a humorous song and had to respond to an encore. “Blue Bird” was excellently sung by the company. A vocal number, ‘ ‘ Bowl of Roses,’ ’ by Mrs. Stretton and Alisses Tristram and Dickenson was very much appreciated as was also a dance by Miss Etta Spooner and Aliss S. Hall. A vocal solo by Air. Arthur Svcnson, with violin accompaniment by Aliss Tristram was insistently encored. The company sang “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountains,” in a most pleasing manner,. this number being followed by a vocal solo by Air. A. J. Dawson. An instrumental duet by Alessrs. R. McCarthy and Al Nicholls, who willingly filled a “gap” in the programme at very short notice, evoked much applause. The next item was a vocal solo by Mr Gill, of Alataroa, this number being ""followed by the singing of “MisereXe” from “Il Trovatore,” by the company. Dressed as a tramp Air. Allan Svcnson delighted the audience with his--playing of “Wandering ATlnstrel” qn an improvised violin, and was obliged to respond to an encore. A sol dance by Aliss S. Hall evoked much applause and this talented performer had to respond to cries for “more.” A duet. “Stars of Night,” was delightfully sung by Alisses O’Brien and Tristram. Air. Hayes again causgd much amusement with a humorous-zsong which was enthusiast! cally encored. A ballet by Alisses Reid (2) and Aloore (pupils of Airs. C. Gordon) was well received, as was also a violin solo by Miss Tristram, and a Welsh dance by Aliss o‘Donoghue. A banjo-mandolin duct by Alessrs. AlcCartty and Nicholls was loudly applauded, and this popular pair had to give an encore. A vocal solo “Three for Jack,” was well sung by Air. Arthur Svenson, who was attired as a sailor. A vocal solo by Air. Gill and the singing of “Larboard Watch,” by the cornpan}' - concluded a most enjoyable programme. At the conclusion of the performance Air. E. Loader, chairman of the Taihape School Committee, thanked the public for their patronage, and also 1 expressed the committee’s thanks and appreciation of the generous action of the Taihape Entertainers in staging a concert for the benefit of the school. The speaker made special mention of the work of Air. E. E. Smith, the company’s conductor. The performers were entertained at supper after the concert and the evening terminated with a short dance. AIAJESTIC THEATRE “TO-NIGHT’S THE NIGHT” “To-night’s the Night,” a hilarious British comedy featuring Leslie Fui ler, will be screened at the Majestic Theatre to-day (Saturday), at three sessions, which commence at 1.45 p.m., 6.45 p.m. and 9 p.m. respectively. GENERAL NEWS Considerable interest is being taken in bowling circles in the Rangitikei Shield match to be played at Taihape during the week-end between the local club and Raetihi. Taihape won the shield last season ami are determined to make a great bid to retain the trophy, and the result of the match with Raetihi is being awaited with more than passing interest.
