MUSICAL EXAMINATIONS Pupils of Patea music teachers were , very successful in the recent examinations held in Hawera by Dr. Vaughan Thomas, examiner for Trinity College. Following arc the results of the different. examinations: — Elocution: L.T.C.L., Aliss E. A. (Betty) McCarty. Singing: A.T.C.L., Air J. Crawford. Piano: Intermediate grade, Aliss G. Masters; junior grade, Misses J. Finlayson, A. C. Hamel, and H. Geary; preparatory, Alisses J. Donald and AV. Waterlands; first steps, Gavin Carey, Dudley Carey, and Fred S. Parsons. ELECTRIC LIGHT FAILS Business and pleasure were both held up last Saturday night, when the electric light service to the town failed. Those shopkeepers lucky enough to own candles soon had them burning, but business premises dosed up rather earlier than usual. The lights were out for nearly three-quarters of an hour. The failure was at first supposed tp have been due to some small accident on the main supply line from Hawera, and this was not contradicted until a message was received from the borough ’s own power house on the cliffs, the telephone lines also having been out of use. It was found that the sea spray blown over the cliffs had caused a leakage of the current, and the terminal pole at the power station had caught alight, causing a ‘collapse of the lines. Air J. O. Cunningham, borough electric engineer, brought the Diesel power engine into action, and the town was lit with power from that source until repairs were effected at the main station. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ CLUB WONDERFUL ASSISTANCE GIVEN At the meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Club last week, the secretary (Air F. W. Locker) presented the following report of the club’s activities during the six months of fits formation. A social gatharing of the Patea Returned Soldiers’ Union was hold in the Town Hall supper-room on Afay 9, and was the occasion of a very representative gathering of men of the district and outside, and of the Army. Navy, Australian FoiYe, Merchant Marine, Patriotic Society, and South African Force. Although not a financial success, the function was in all other wavs up to expectations. The thanks of the committee were due to Air Haddow for the free use of the room and piano; to Air Gilmore for his assistance; and to the ladies for the arranging of tables and decorations.

A successful application was made ,to tho Waverlev Patriotic Society for a grant to assist in educating a soldier’s children at a secondary school. Application was made to the New Zealand War Relief Association to assist purchase of stock. This application was declined, but has since been arranged through the Rural Advances Department on better terms. A request was made to the Pensions’ Department Appeal Board for a re-appeal of a disabled man with wife and children. This pension is now granted and an application for an economic pension made. An application was made to the War Relief Association for assistance of a disabled soldier with one child, and £3 was granted. An appeal was made also to the association for a married man with no dependants, and was granted £3. Two applications for relief were made to tho association for soldiers with two and three children, respectively, and those were pending. Two applications were received from returned men for employment and work was found temporarily. Ono application had been received from a man under the canteen fund scheme from a private employer for one dav. Applications were received from 27 men for bed and meals and temporary relief.
