SHOOTING

; ON THE MINIATURE RANGES ' ! INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. . HIGH SI'ANDAGD I.’l J OLi I >1:11 ! ! H. HILL MAINTAINS HIS PLACE. I I Every year records a steady improvcI incut in the standard of shooting in the ■ Wanganui District Miniature Rifle Associalion. .It is twelve years since the j association was formed and in that I time it has very firmly established the i sport in this district. Last Wednesday night, whim th p Mayor of Wanganui (Mr. N. G. Armstrong) presented the prizes .after the individual championships had been decided, there was a very enthusiastic note to proceedings. His Worship laid stress on the fact that, the standard of shooting had improved as compared with last year. Those who were associated with th' 1 association in its infancy were im pressed with that fact and also with the vast improvement in the general conduct of administration, particularly that on the range itself. Matters were conducted without a hitch and full credit in this connection was due to the officers concerned, particularly Mr. G. H. Jones (the association secretary), the range officers (Messrs. Bert and Ray Spurdlc), the checking com niitteo (Messrs. 11. Ellery and Fred. Jones), the handicapper (Mr. D. A. U. Lilburne), target scrutineer (Mr. ED'ear). Mr. JI. Spurdie, who assisted the secretary, officials of the Railway Club who made the range available for the championship finals, both senior and junior, and last, but by no means least, the ladies of Castlecliff am l Citizens’ Clubs who provided refreshments that were heartily appreciated. Those competitors who had qualified for the junior championship completed their scores on the Tuesday night, the seniors firing ou Wednesday. One mat ter of note in connection with the shooting was that the only competitor to record a possible (100) off the rille was a junior, Les. Garner, of the Citizens’ Club. His feat was all the more commendable in view of the fact that this year marked his first appear ance as a miniature range competitor. Proof that “old riflemen never die | but simply fade away” was provided I by Henry Hill, of the Ohakea Club, I who, for the fourth time, three times in succession, carried off the senior championship title. He had to compile ■ a total of 99 off the rifle to do the job. There were two others on the qualifying list who had aggregates a point better than he—W. Klatt (Ohakea) .and C. Broughton (Bulls), both of whom entered the final shoot with 555. Klatt finished second, only a point behind the winner and Broughton camo fourth with 650, being beaten for third place by the young Manawatu champion, T. Prichard (Bulls) who reached 651, doing as well as the champion in

the final and putting on 99 with the I rifle. Others who did as well as Hill in e the final shoot, putting up 99, were E. Broughton (Bulls) in the senior ranks II and M. Lux ford (Upokongaro) in the p junior. L , Good shooting was recorded in the t . junior competition, a Sanson competi c tor, F. Tostevin, coming through with p the title. He had a total of 553 over .. his eight shoots through the season and in the final made 97. bringing his aggregate up to 650. p. Cole. Ohakea. as runner-up, added 96 in the final 1, shot to his eight-shoot aggregate of i- 550, thus finishing with 646. Keith i- Lumsden, Sanson, was third with 643. As. Air. Lilburne remarked the shiooti ing indicated that many juniors of this t year would he seniors next. Details of the scoring are as folI. iow:—
