THE SHEFFIELD SHIELD FIRST MATCH COMMENCES Ml TOR LA AN D QI EEN SLAN D Received Oct. 28. 10.5 p.m. BRISBANE, Oct. 28. , The first Sheffield Shield match opened to-day between Queensland and Victoria. The weather was ideal. Woodfull won the toss and Victoria batted first. Woodfull fell a victim when 35 to the schoolboy bowler, J. Govan, who later accounted for Rigg at .13. H is a long time since Woodfull has been clean bowled. However, the following batsmen took the score to big figures. Victoria, in the first innings, lost three for 382. Ponsford made 98, Darling 116 not out and O’Brien 105 not outRetract and the Cup. Retract's failure to take his place in any of the fields at the recent Wellington meeting does not make it look as if his New Zealand Cup engagement is now to be continued. Recently his preparation was interrupted on a couple of occasions by slight mishaps. Ran Second Twice. Flying Prince ran two good races at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Monday. In the Members’ Handicap, the chief Ilat event of the day, he came through in the straight and boat all but Protomint. .Tn the Bollard Handicap he was last for most of the way, but finished very fast down the straight to cut Gay Lap out of second money. Flying Prince is very partial to soft going, and when he again strikes such conditions he will bo handy again. 11l Winning Vein. Tradesman wou the Bollard Memorial from end to end at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Monday. He jumped out quickly and was always in front, winning with ease by three lengths. This gelding is very well just, now and in his present form should be hard to beat in other sprint races in the near future.

A Likely Improver. Royal England, a five-year-old gelding by Little England, won the Hunters’ Hurdles in good style at Cambridge on Monday. He was well back in the early stages, but moved up along the track the last time and, joining the leaders before the turn, outstayed them, to win comfortably. He .lumped well throughout' and looks like beating better company, says an Auckland writer. | Run Off At First. Sir Glands, a gelding by All Red, who had shown promise at the Rangitikei feeting, was taken up from Turakina to contest the Farmers’ Steeplechase at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Monday, but he ran off at the first fence, due to another competitor boring off, and his chances were settled. He was brought back and jumped all right until he fell about three furlongs from home. Trouble at Ellerslie. The Waikato Hunt Cup winner Trouble is expected to be at Ellerslie for the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting opening next week. It was L. Knapp’s intention to keep him at Cambridge for a few days before bringing him on to Ellerslie. Trouble has improved considerably and his fitness enabled him to make short work of the opposition at the finish of Monday’s contest. Blessing in Disguise. Financial stringency which caused a curtailment of picnic racing in New South Wales h:|; proved a blessing in disguise for L. Haigh, trainer of Kogi Ila, winner of the Caulfield Cup on October 15. Rogilla was bred by Mr. Hunter White, a. member of the Australian Jockey Club committee, and given by him to his son for picnic raving. But then came the temporary suspension of most of this class of racing in New South Wales, and Mr. White’s son, haping no use for the horse, leased him to Haigh, for whom he has now scored wins and places worth £6261 15s. Before the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap. in which he appeared to have a great chance of success, an offer of 3000 guineas was made for the horse, but this was refuseif and Rogilla’s connections have had no reason to regret the refusal, for sinve then the horse has won £5050. of which twothirds have gone to Haigh and onethird to the lessor.
