WAVERLEY

BUGBY FOOTBALL Great surprise was evinced throughout the Wairoa Sub-union last Saturday when the decfat of the championship leaers, Waverley, was announced. Bangitatau was the team that brought this about, after one of the hardest games seen on the Waverley grounds this season. The better and harder training of the Bangitatau team stood them in good stead, and was mainly responsible for tho defeat of Waverley. whose players have not been in very strict training. Although defeated, however, Waverley still maintain the championship, having a good lead from Bangitatau of 4 points previous to Saturday’s match. There is still a chance that in the last game of the round Waverley will be beaten again, but it is unlikely. If this eventuated, there would need to be a play-off. probably with Bangitatau, who would need to win -while Waverley lost. Bangitatau defeated Waverley by a converted try to nil. EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT FINAL MEET AT KAKABAMEA Hunting crops, whips and spurs will be laid aside now for another eight months until another hunting season begins. Last Saturday the last meet for the present season was h°ld at Kakararaea. Although the morning had promised a sunny fine day. by the time the huntsmen had gathered, dark clouds had gathered and rain fell heavily later in the afternoon.

This hunt, popularly known as the lt Doctor ’s Hunt.” is given by the master, Dr. Simmons and Mrs. Simmons. Although rain somewhat spoilt tho afternoon’s sport, some excellent runs were had over the country to the west of the main road at Kakaramea. Hounds went well, and the horses showed the training they had had throughout the season. No kill was made, .but at one time the pack and field were close on the tail of 1 'puss,” but ho slipped them, and tho hounds lost the scent. The last run of the day was the best, and riders and mounts came in to afternoon tea tired but none rhe worse for the afternoon. .Tumping was good, and the country had been well prepared. Before wending their way homewards cheers were given for Dr. and Mrs. Simmons for their hospitality, and for tho continued interest and help given to all members by the master, Dr. Simmons. Three cheers wore never more lustily given than those called for by Deputy-Afaste - " J. Sheahan, for Dr. Simmons and Mr?. Simmons.
