CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday, when the president, Mr. D. P. Scarfe, was in the chair. The statement of receipts of the “drive” was adopted, on the motion of Mr. McDowell . The chairman reported on the activities of the committee, entrusted with the details. The chamber was indebted to the carriers, the Call office, the owners of the premises, the auctioneers, and others for assistance rendered and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded them. Air. McDowell said he would like placed on record the appreciation of the energy shown by the chairman He had entered into the proposal in a most enthusiastic manner and the success of the “drive” was largely due io his efforts.

Afcssrs Drury, T. Fagg and A. E. Willoughby endorsed these sentiments The chairman, in reply, said that without the co-operation of the members of the chamber he could not have done so well. He had hoped to get a larger amount but £23 must be considered very satisfactory under the ch eumstances.

The sub-comm ittec was asked to con for with the Community Committee with regard to the distribution of the proceeds.

The scarcity of justices of the peace was discussed. It was decided to make an effort to get the number increases by at least three—one for the Para para Road district, one for the Oran taha and Pukckaha district, and one for the borough. The secretary (Mr. Jack) was requested to interview the mail contractor and the postmaster with regard to late letters on Sunday night. The chairman reported on the work of the Unemployment Committee, on which body he was the representative of the chamber. On the motion of Mr. Drury the chairman was asked to be the delegate of the chamber at the public welcome to the advisory inspector of fire briberies on the occasion of his visit to Ractihr. Air. Willoughby stated that he

thought the chamber, being the organistion of the business people, should bo officially represented. The date of the visit would be announced later. The chairman agreed to attend the function. The chamber was very much interested in the prevention of fires and the reduction of insurance rates. An account, for 15s for expenses in connection with the “drive” was passed for payment.
