UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held on Thursday night, Mr. W. 11. Bo wick presiding. Also present.—Messrs R. G. Dalziell, 11. 1). Simpson,’ E. J. Hurley, N. Boyne, W. O'Brien, R. A. Gordon. An apology lor absence was received from Mr. R. Al. S. Jones. A letter was read from Air. J. B. 'AleKnight, lessee of the Town Hall, forwarding ten free tickets to the talkies to be issued to the most deserving cases among the local unemployed. On the motion of the chairman and Air. Gordon, Mr. McKnight was thanked for his offer, and the allocation was left in the hands of the secretary. Several circulars from the Unemployment Board were read. Advice was received that the subsidy under 4b scheme had been increased from 33 l-3rd. to 50 per cent. Several applications under 4A scheme were approved. One under No. 5 “over the fence” was left to the certifying officer to enquire. Mr. Simpson said two local men had asked'him to bring before the committee the question whether men not farmers paying wages tax, could have unemployed men to plant potatoes or cut hedges etc. In one instance a man with a big family after paying wages tax had nothing to pay a man wages to plant potatoes. Air. Dalziell thought such applications should be approved Air. Simpson said growing potatoes was equally as good as farming. The chairman said the question could be brought before the board. On the motion of Messrs Simpson and Gordon the board is to be asked for a ruling on the question of potato planting members being agreed that hedge cutting was not on the same footing. The chairman said that under the way the scheme was being run, labour should be available to others equally with farmers. The certifying officer reported that, for next week, the allocation was £lO 3s 6d short. The necessary “cut” was made. GENERAL NEWS. A man named John Stewart, who was engaged scrub-cutting at Otairi was reported missing on Wednesday night. Constable Cosgraye was notilied and a search was made at daylight on Alonday morning. The man was found at 9.15 by a boy named Duncan Fraser at the foot of a 20ft. bank over which he had apparently fallen. He was lying at the foot by a stream. He had been out all night and was suffering from exposure and was removed to Wanganui Hospital. Ou Saturday last, in avoiding another car at a bad corner hidden by trees near Air. A. H. Rhodes’ residence at Rata, a car driven by Mr. J. Cameron got into a rut on the roadside. Airs. Bailey, who was an occupant, hit the top of the car and suffered a severe cut over the eye. BRIDGE AND 500 PARTY. The attendance at the bridge and 500 party held in the school rooms on Tuesday eveniug must have proved very gratifying to the school committee, there being about 50 people present. Bridge attracted the greater following, a good competition resulting in Mrs. 8. A. R. Alair and Air. E. W. Donovan carrying off the prizes. The “500” players were not so numerous, five tables only participating. The successful players were Miss Eileen Kollas and Air. Ken Follas. An abundant and very dainty supper was provided and dispensed by the com-mittee-men’s w’ivcs. RUGBY POOTBALL. THIRD GRADE SEVEN-A-SIDE. Hunterville has entered two teams for the seveu-a-side at Marton to-day. “A” team —Wills, A. Hall, T. Simons, Bartlett, Gordon, Gibbs and Aleads. “B” team—Moir, Bennett, Hurley, Holford, V. Dalziell, K. Hall and L. Afailman.
