Town Talk

Co-operation. The Wanganui Garrison Band, besides forgoing tho use of the Alajestic Theatre on Sunday evening next, has notified the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band that they would assist them in any way possible at the concert for the Mayor's Relief Fund.

Beautifying the River. Increasing interest is being taken in the beautification of tho banks of the Wanganui River within the city area, especially above the Town Bridge. The Development League has now decided to ask the City Council to consider the beautification of the river bank between the Town Bridge and the boatsheds.

Community Singing. To-night a monster community sing will be held in the Opera House. The proceeds will be in aid of the Mayor’s Relief Fund, and although admission is free a charge of one shilling per scat will be made. The doors open at a quarter-past seven, and the evening will commence at five minutes to eight. Air. Owen Pritchard, Air. Frank Crowther and Mrs. Afaudo Russell will be conducting the singers, while the Garrison Band is lending its help to a valuable cause. There is a possibility of the community singing becoming a fortnightly fixture. Local Car Terminals.

Opinions that service cars should n.< be kept out of the business area tv shifting arrival and departure point’s to back streets, were expressed by Mr D. Dustin at the last meeting of the Development League. The passengers, he said, brought, a certain amoun'flbf business to the town. Another ffißnber suggested that there was far°soo much pin-pricking in Wanganui in connection with motor by-laws and regulations. The league decided to take no action until more information was received. Prize Meccano Model. “Wo consider the model you submitted in this contest to be an excellent example of Meccano construction and wish to endorse tho high opinion passed upon it by the judges of the competition,” writes Mr. F. Hornby, managing-director of Meccano Ltd-, Liverpool, to Master R. I. Wallace, Pitt Street, Wanganui, in informing him that he has won the second prize in Section B of the international model-building competition. A specially designed certificate has also been forwarded. No Funds Available. The non-sealing of the stretch of road between Himitangi and Foxton has led to several discussions by Wanganui bodies recently, and the Wanganui Automobile Club recently requested the Main Highways Board to see that the work is put in hand when funds permit. The board has replied that it is anxious to see this section surfaced, but there is no •chance of a sum being available in the near future to enable the work to be proceeded with. Contracts for construction work now in hand, such as the Rangitikci County section of the same highway, have monopolised all available finance.

Relief Depot. A Kjentral relief depot is to be opened by the Wanganui Unemployment Committee to-morrow morning in the old gas offices in Ridgway Street. There the meat formerly distributed by the Wanganui Hospital Board will be given to necessitous cases among the unemployed and other charitable aid will be handled. Those applying for this help will only be allowed to visit, the depot once a week and everyone receiving aid will be charged a nominal sum which need not be paid in cash but by labour, each being expected to do a small amount of work in return. No applications for meat will be received by the Wanganui Hospital Board tomorrow.

Housing at the Show. Suggestions have been made that the Wanganui Show should be held at Spriggens Park instead of at the Racecourse. The present industrial hall, it is proposed, should be shifted to the park, there to be used for football and show purposes. The present portion of the grounds where the stock is displayed would be included in the proposed show area. Jumping events would be held on the football ground. At the last meeting of the Wanganui and District Development League, Mr D. Dustin, chairman, said that the question of moving or erecting new ones was beyond the financial resources of the, Winter Show Committee. It was the opinion of Mr J. Coull that six buildings the size of the present industrial hall were required. The meeting decided to support any movement for the furtherance of the show. Offer of Land.

Five hundred acres of sand-dune country have been offered for tho purpose of tree planting, by Mr D. L. Blyth, of No. 1 Line. The land is at present hold under Government lease, and Mr Blyth has offered to surrender the lease, with the provision that the block be fenced. The Wanganui and District Development League has gathered the information that there arc 3547 acres of sand-dune country in the Wanganui and Rangitikei electoral districts, and the information has been passed on to members of Parliament concerned. The Forestry Department has offered to supply trees at 2s 6<l per 1000. Messrs W. A. Veitch and A. Stuart, AI. ’sP.. have been asked by the league to act in conjunction in placing a scheme of utilising unemployed labour for planting of such areas before the Unemployment Board. The land offered by Mr Blyth is similar to that at the Wanganui Airport before the improvement of the area was carried out.

Juvenile Employment. Employment for boys on leaving school was referred to by Mr. J. D. Crowley at a meeting of the. Wanganui Unemployment Committee yesterday morning. Touching on the importance of the subject, he pointed out that two members of Parliament had been appointed to investigate the position, Mr. S. G. Smith, of New Plymouth, in the North Island, and Air. A. E. Ansell, Chalmers, in the South Island. Mr. Crowley suggested that Mr. Smith be asked to address the Wanganui Unemployment Committee and that in the meantime members think tho matter over in order that helpful proposals be offered to Air. Smith in the event of his addressing the committee. The suggestion was agreed to. Air. E. W. F. Gohns referred to the classes being arranged by tho national secretary of the Y.AI.C.A. in which unemployed boys were taught different trades by unemployed tradesmen. All boys were to be given the fullest opportunity of attending those •’asses.
