UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Ohingaiti Unemployment Committee was held on Monel ay day evening. Present, Messrs. J. R. McKnight, chairman, C. Stent, R. J. Linton, and A. Charles, certifying officer. An apology for absence was received from Mr. R. W. Wrightson. Correspondence was received from the Unemployment Commissioner relative to the action to be taken with regard to unemployed who failed to cultivate gardens, which correspondence stated, inter alia, that “The instructions contained in these circulars are to be rigidly enforced during the coming season, and all unemployed workers should be notified accordingly. It is to be understood that it is to be a definite condition of obtaining relief that unemployed workers should satisfy requirements in this respect.” Four new registrations were considered and passed and fourteen applications for work under scheme 4A were approved. The certifying officers reported that there were now 17 mon employed under scheme 4A. and it was stated bhat there was a prospect of work for four more men shortly. The certifying officer stated that ho had. as requested, interviewed the commissioner whilst in Wellington, and as a result a fresh allocation had been made for work under scheme No. 5. Considerable discussion took place as to the practical working of the “over the fence” scheme and it was decided to hold the matter in abeyance for the time being. Mr. Charles reported the result, of his interview in Connection with the proposal to establish a camp for single men in the distret, and gave .the latest information available. It was agreed that little more could be done by the committee and that it was now a matter between the local body and the Public Works Department. RUGBY FOOTBALL.
