The remarkably good milk test of 15.4 has been returned by a four-year-old Jersey grade cow, owned by Mr. D. J. Beard, of Kauangaroa. At this time of the year the average test is stated to be in the vicinity of 6 or 7. The figure recorded by Mr. Beard’s cow is authentic, for the test was carried out by the Manawatu Herd-Testing Association.

Advertising Pays “I am satisfied that, even when pessimism is evident in certain directions, advertising pays,” remarked a Wanganui business man yesterday afternoon. He inserted a half-page advertisement in the “Chronicle” yesterday morning, and early in the day received several telephone messages from as far distant as Marton, Raetihi, Waverley and Hunterville, in addition to numerous calls from subscribers on rural lines.

Construction of a concrete weir across the Kai Iwi Stream, at a spot surveyed preparatory to the erection of an auxiliary pumping plant, is two-thirds completed. A heavy demand on the boots which are being supplied to the unemployed by the Revs. H. G. Goring and IL Dudley has been made during the past week, with the result that the stock has become low. A request is made to those people who have boots or shoes which could be reconditioned to leave them either at the Ladies’ Rest or at the Department of Labour in Trafalgar Place. Two men are being employed to effect repairs and ' they are working at full pressure.

Appeal for Help An appeal has been made to the Rev. H. G. Goring by the men who arc stationed at the forestry camp at Karioi for boots, clothing, reading matter and playing cards. The men are stationed in a particularly-lonely place in the country, and are some .1600 feet above sea level, so that during the winter time the climate is often severe. Any person who can help the men by donating the articles asked for is requested to communicate with the Rev. Goring.

Central Relief Committee Proposed It was decided at a meeting of the Mayor’s Central Relief Committee, held yesterday afternoon, that the Wanganui Uijemployment Committee be asked to establish immediately a

This committee is to be asked to take over the work of assisting unemployed, which is now being carried out by a number of small charitable institutions, and to form a central depot with a view to eliminating overlapping. The matter is to be considered by a special meet, ing of the Unemployment Committee on Tuesday.

Castlecliff Health Camp Owing to curtailments which have been effected in the architect’s branch of the Wanganui Education Board, it has become impossible for the board to supervise No. 5 scheme work on the children’s health camp site at Castle cliff. It was stated at the last meet ing of the board that regulations now made it imperative that a man should supervise the starting of the men in and a man would bo required again to chock them off the job. The board thought, that some way might, be found to get, over the difficulty and the mat ter was left, so that the chairman could consult with the chairman of the Wanganui Unemployment Commit tee.
