COMPETITIONS

MANAWATU SOCIETY THE PRESIDENT’S THANKS. At the conclusion of the performances at the Manawatu Competitions Society’s festival on Friday evening, the president (Mr. M. H. Oram) returned thanks to the judges and competitors. He said the society could iy claim to having staged one of the most successful festivals yet held. Two factors had made for the success. Firstly, the judges had entered heart and soul into the function, and f- w outside those in close contact with the running of the festival knew of the time and enthusiasm the judges had given to their work. They had come to Palmerston North at a nominal fee in order to assist the society. (Applause.) Air. Oram said that words failed to express the society’s appreciation of w’ :.r the judges had done. The second factor making for success was the support received from visiting competitors. They had come from all over Vie muthorn end of the North Island, and tho society appreciated their presence and hoped they would return ""a in. (Applause). Miss E. Edgar, of Christchurch, who judged the dancing classes, said it had been a groat pleasure to »come to Pal merston North. Until 15 months ago she had lived in London, and ’-.o had been amazed at the high standard of dancing she had discovered > New Zealand. She expressed her thanks to the secretary (Mr. K. G. Chamberlain) and assistant (Mr. N. Turnbull) tor many courtesies shown. . Mrs. McKenzie (Waipukurau), judge of the national dancing, congratulated teachers and pupils on the very fine work she had witnessed. Mr H. Barry Coney, of Auckland, iudge' of the musical section, declared that he had passed through a wmdorfnl week He had been connected with competitions for the last 22 years, anily he could not recall one that had been run more smoothly. He congratulated those who had persevered, although not winning prizes. It had been a pleasure to note that they had not withdrawn, as was often done as a result odisappointment. Mr. Coney also ipoke ot the help given by tho secretary and Messrs. Turnbull, Spraggon and Wollett (stage manager).
