ON TRENTHAM TRACKS < ( J SATURDAY’S OPERATIONS. 1 i PREPARING FOR OTAKI. 5 1 There was ideal weather for gallop- ( ing at Trentham on Saturday morn- ( ing, and, with the Otaki meeting in ] the offing, trainers , sent along the . horses they have engaged there. The < very outside of tLe course proper was i available, and the rtack was easy, with ; horses going into it a little in parts, j writes “ Rangatira,” in the Evening Post. Purse (S. Wilson) was responsible 1 for a smart trial in beating Flower (G. < Williams) by half a length over half a i mile in 49 3-ssec. The two-year-old i daughter of Paper Money had an ad- i vantage in the weights, but there can j be no doubt she is improving at present. She is to contest the maiden I events at Otaki. : Cape Paraki (W. E. Shand) was on i terms with Miss Beatrice (J. Gunn), ] who had picked him up at the half- ; mile, at the close of five furlongs in Imin. 4 2-sscc., the last half-mile in ; 51 2-ssec. Cape Paraki, who has not yet raced, is fairly well forward for the Otaki maidens. Royal Game (Wilson) led Black Mint fR. J. Mackie) throughout six furlongs, which was covered in 54 4-5 . sec. The. horses hung on in the straight, and Black Mint, when closing on his mate, lost a lot of ground when avoiding a trestle. Cardinal Moon (K. Hawkins) and jCape of Good Hope (R. G. Bush) sprinted down the straight, the latter, with a big pull in the weights, finishing just in front. Before tho gallop Cardinal Moon was given barrier practice and jumped out very smartly. The Sun (C. Willis) did a working gallop over six furlongs. The best time of the morning for half mile was registered by Aroma CMackie) and Eminent (Wilson), who | rattled off the distance in 49 l-ssec.. an | attractive trial. Aroma, who is a two-

year-old full-sister to Pewa, had the advantage most of the way, but Eminent drew up to her at the post. The filly will be having her first outing at Otaki, Vitaphond (Gunn) found Rioghail (J. K. Robertson) of little use to him over six furlongs in Imin. 19 3-ssec., the last half-mile in 53see. Vitaphone went particularly well, and could have improved the time if his companion had been speedier early. Rioghail, a rising six-year-old chestnut gelding by Grandcourt from the All Black mare Cleasanta, was recently purchased by H. B. Lorigan from his breeder, Mr. R. A. McKenzie, and his showing was very disappointing to his ownertrainer. It is two years since he raced and he has never done better than minor places. Tobaccoland (Wilson) led Joio de Vai (J. F. Nicholson) most of the way through a mile gallop, but tho latter drew up and shaded him before reach ing the post. The final seven furlongs took Imin. 33 4-ssee., and the last, halfmile 53sec., quite a useful effort on the part of both horses. Little Thrush (A. Leach) just led Bright Song (Mackie) throughout half a mile in 49 4-ssec. Both went well on the easy track. Bright Song has not long been back in work, nor for that matter has Little Thrush. Waratah (Wilson) slipped over four and a-half furlongs alone, the last halfmile being done in 51 l-ssec. New Era (Leach) and Cockpen (Wilson) came down the straight from the three furlongs together, f finishing practically on terms after showing plenty of speed. The only horse to jump was Pahu, who, with K. Hawkins in the saddle, went over the three schooling hurdles cleanly and with a solid pace on. Afterwards hi* trotted round the centre a couple of time. He is the makings of a useful hurdler, for he seems to relish the change to jumping.
