CHAMPION ATHLETES

SUB-CENTRE MEETING LAST NIGHT’S RESULTS MANY GOOD FINISHES Never has Marton held a championship athletic and cycling meeting, but the Wanganui Sub-centre championships held on the Marton Park yesterday in the afternoon and night were' an outstanding success. Beautiful weather favoured the opening, and although a slight rain was felt for several minutes in the evening, it was not enough to trouble the lightest of apparel. Event followed event in quick succession, and the competition had concluded by ten o’clock. Handicap trophies and championship ribbons were then presented by Mr. E. C. Haddock, president of the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. At a charge of Is in the evening, and 6d in the afternoon, the gross takings were over £45. Headed by the Marton Band, there was a parade of athletes at the opening of the evening session. The event was spectacular and was appreciated by the crowd. Fine finishes were witnessed both in the afternoon and evening. Several of the races had but inches separating first, second and third, a number having the first and second competitors only inches apart. The track was not conducive to fast times. D. Evans, of Taihape. won the quar-ter-mile and the half-mile both in very convincing fashion, the former in 52 seconds, and the latter in two minutes. Points for the inter-club sub-centre banner were: Wanganui 92, Marton 49, and Taihape 11. Members of the Marton Corps of the St. John Ambulance were on duty and had a tent erected in readiness, but their services were not required. Marton riders took charge of the cycling events as the Wanganui wheelmen, unused to the grass track with the sharp turns, were riding wide. A slight unevenness in the level of.the track at one end also told its tale. Every credit is due to the officials for what was obviously good organisation and for the smart running of the meeting.
