COOKING AND HOMECRAFT. A suggestion was mado recently in tho Auckland district that women inspectors lor all matters of training in which girls are concerned would bo to tho general advantage. It was kecnlv discussed, but rather curiously, tho opinion of the menkind at the meeting seemed to be that women would ba too critical, and would offence by their supervision ami inquiry. A Member remarked on tho few girls or young "omen nowadays who can cook really "ell >t was astonishing how few domestics could even “boil a potato” properly, while the breakfast bacon was either raw or chips, and other viands were to match. Ho thought hat the health of the nation depended largely on the cooking, and, as j t wag generally taught throughout tho land in tho schools by trained women and there was also a system of Domestio Economics with a number of specially trained teachers also, ho wondered I what was the reason that a decent cook was a “ rara avis.” When it was realised that every years hundreds of giil> received teaching in cooking and general housecraft at technical schools ;it. was a matter for surprise that they made so little use of tho training [afterwards. It was suggested that i parents should be invited to visit the (Classes and get some adequate idea of | tho training given, in order to make use of it, and encourage the trainees to | keep up what they learned at the tech- ; A great many of domestic help are faced with the fact that very few of the workers arc cither willing or aide to cook well. It is a. I fact to be a good cook a person must ■ have both brains and industry, and , this fact is little recognised, either in [social consideration or payment. ■
