SURF CLUB DANCE. There was an excellent crowd at .the dance held by the Batea Surf and Life-saving Club at Manutahi last Wednesday night. Visitors were present from Hawera in large numbers, and the whole programme went through with a swing. Gay streamers of green and lemon made the hall look bright, an the addition of the multicolours of the frocks worn added to effect. Music was supplied by Wills’ Melody Makers from Hawera and greatly added to the enjoyment of the evening. Several novelty dances were held, Mrs. S. Hunt and partner being the winners of the Monte Carlo. Messrs. J. Couch and S. Hunt acted as M’s.C. throughout the evening, and carried cut their duties most capably. Supper was served by the committee, and showed that a great deal of energy had been spent on this part of the evening’s programme. Extras were played by Messrs Rae, Bourke, Adams and Currie- That the dance was a financial success was proved by the takings at the door, which amounted to over £l4. UNEMPLOYED. Applications for work by unemployed are not so numerous at present in Batea as in previous months. There is a total of 65 registered, 44 of them being married men. Of these only one is a new applicant. The majority of l the unemployed are placed out at work ' under the No. 5 scheme, while three or four are working under the No. 4A scheme. Definite evidence is shown that half of the men arc obtaining work on other jobs, by the fact that only twenty or so of these are applying for work to the Unemployment Committee. Upon a scrutiny of the unemployed register last week, the number of unemployed in the district was reduced from 83 to 64, by the names of those who had left the district, were not eligible or had obtained permanent work elsewhere were struck off. GENERAL. The improved appearance of the gardens round the Town Hall and municipal buildings have called forth praise from many passers-by during the past few days. The beds in front of the council offices arc a blaze of pink chrysanthemums, while along the rear wall of the Memorial Building the tall stalks of the sunflowers are showing colour. The greensward round all the buildings is looking particularly well-kept, and is showing the result of the time spent on it. Along one board fence some sweetpeas present a colourful scene. For al Ithis effect of wellbeing too much praise cannot be given to those responsible.
