TURN FOR THE BETTER

AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS MORE CHEERFUL SPIRIT. AUCKLAND, Oct. 12. “I think the people of Auckland are making more talk about hard times than those of Sydney, now that the Australians appear to have gained fresh hope,” said Mr. F. N. Ambler, of Auckland, who returned on Saturday by the Sonoma after a short business visit to Sydney and Melbourne. Mr. Ambler expressed the opinion that conditions in Australia had improved to a groat extent within the past six months.

‘‘The people in Australia are much more cheerful now,” said Mr. Ambler. “When I was thero last everyone was complaining about the hard times, but now they seem to have reconciled themselves to the fact that they will have to wait for a return of prosperity. On all sides there arc signs d.at conditions have taken a turn for the better, and tho public arc displaying more confidence.”

A similar opinion regarding the change in Australian conditions was expressed by Mr. Al ax Liebman, a New York skin and pelt buyer, who was returning to tho United States after his annual visit to tho Commonwealth. He stated ho had made a business trip to Australia every year for the past .14 yqgrs, and had followed the tone of tone of business with great interest. While in the past the Australians generally had been spending more than than earned, they had now awakened to tho fact that the national income must be increased to meet thei. obligations, and they were cheerfully turning tn the task of nrodreing more. “Tho decision of the British Government to suspend the gold standard has had a very favourable effect.” said Mr. Liebman. “As a result, tho general tone of business ha» been better in tho past few weeks than f(,;- manv months, and tho price of wool and other commodities for export has improved materially, a rise of from 25 to 30 per cent, having taken place in some cases.”
