DANCING MARATHON

A SENSATIONAL ENDING COLOGNE, Oct. 13. A girl going mad, a second girl on the verge of insanity, and the promoter decamping, were among tho excitements of a 30 days’ marathon which began on September 19. Twenty-two couples participated, and only two contestants were left after 530 hours. The competitors ate while dancing, and were permitted 15 minutes’ rest hourly to enable masseurs to reinfuso life into a number of limbs, and nurses to revive semiconscious women. Most of the couples dropped out on September 29, when the French promoter went to Paris, declaring he was going to collect the prize money.

A girl suddenly went mad, jumped the harrier and ran amok in the crowd until overpowered. There were amazing scenes when it was .announced that the marathon had ended. Un;aid nurses, masseurs, cooks and attendants menacingly surrounded the pay box. The cashier pocketed the takings and bolted, while two Frenchmen, who took over tho arrangements after the departure of the promoter, were, arrested on the Franco-German frontier, attempting to escape to Franco with the proceeds.
