SMOKING INSIDE BUSES
BANNED IN LONDON. BESULT OF NEW ACT 44 N0 smoking” notices were lately posted inside ail the 4900 London General Omnibus Company’s buses ou the streets of London. The Public Service Vehicles (Conduct of Drivers, Conductors, and Passengers) Provisional Regulations of 1931, made by the Minister of Transport under the new Road Act, are i.cw in force. And these regulations give the company powers to prosecute any passenger wi>o insists on smoking inside an omnibus. The London General Omnibus Company had 44 n0 smoking” notices inside omnibuses until 1924. Their right to enforce the order was challenged in a test case. The smoker won, and when the company found they had no legal authority to prohibit smoking, notices were removed.
**Our conductors were powerless before the new regulations took effect,’’ an official of the London General Omnibus Company stated. “ Their instructions were to request anyone smoking inside an omnibus to 4 go upstairs/ but, if the smoker declined to do so, the conductor could do nothing.” The London County Council tramways department is not affected by the new regulations. Smoking inside tram:ars is prohibited under a London County Council by-aw.
