FEARS IN CHINA
NANKING REFUGEES
“WAR” ON EVERYBODY’S LIPS JAPAN AND THE LEAGUE DECISION WILL BE IGNORED SHANGHAI, Oct. 13. Refugees throughout to day streamed from Nanking to Shanghai as rumours of imminent hostilities flooded the capital. Thousands of Chinese residents have likewise evaluated, seeking the shelter of the foreign settlements and taking only their most valuable belongings. The word “war” is on everybody’s * Hps. Even Japanese residents outside the settlements moved inwards, responding to the official Japanese warning.
The consensus of opinion here is that Japan will ignore whatever decisions the League reaches, maintaining the attitude that direct negotiations are the only possible course. Mr Shigemitpu has received China’s reply, in which China refutes the charges of fostering anti-Japanese movements, and blaming Japan for all of the Sino Japanese difficu’ties. The British aircraft carrier has postponed her departure from Shanghai.
