CROQUET SEASON OPENS

4 THE GONVILLE CLUB The Gonville croquet season for 193132 was officially opened yesterday afternoon. The wather was perfect for such a function and the largo gathering of members and visitors from other clubs had a very enjoyable afternoon. The club’s president, Airs T. Warnock, welcomed the visitors and old and new members. She referred to the new conditions under which the club would be playing, and on behalf of the members, thanked the Mayor and all those who had helped in the past, and said that the club was now free of debt and they aimed to make the lawns as good as any in the Dminion. Airs Warnock then introduced the Alayor (Air N. G. Armstrong).

In declaring the season open, Mr Armstrong thanked the members for asking him to be present, and in referring to the altered •conditions, said that the council had to look into affairs and found that the clubs were costing a great deal of money. In •consequence the council had fixed a small rental and the grounds would now bo self-supporting. lie remarked on the wonderful asset .the various club grounds were to the city and said they were a credit to the members of the clubs. It was hoped to have the championship here, and there was every chance of Wanganui being put on the map. Ho congratulated the club on the appearance of the lawns and hoped thev would have a good season. The Alayorcss, Airs N. G. Armstrong, played the first ball and the grounds were declared open.

A lovely bouquet was presented to the ATayoross at the conclusion of the ceremony.

A delightful afternoon tea, provided by the members, was served in the pavilion. Airs Beard was the tea convener and assisting her were: Mesdames Whitcombe, G. Clark, Alurray, Bea.ven and ITay.
