THE YEARLING SALES

TRENTHAM CATALOGUE. Though the 1932 yearling sales at Trentham are more than three months distant it is interesting to note that entries will be closed next Tuesday, it being the intention of the auctioneers to get the catalogue out as early as possible in order to have it circulated in overseas countries. Enquiries have been received in connection with the sales from England, United States, Argentina and South Africa, and it is hoped that competition may develop from one or other of these countries. In addition, the fact that an owner from Chili was a purchaser on a large scale last January encourages the hope that further purchases will be made from that country, though a severe political crisis in Chile makes the outlook none too promising.

The quality of the catalogue for the yearling sales, which is now being compiled, will be the highest on record. Mr. G. M. Currie, whose sire, Limond, headed the list last season, has 17 yearlings for the sales and among these are included an own brother to Commendation, r.n own brother to Mask, an own brother to Agrion, and an own brother to Veilmond. All of these Koa-tanui-bred horses were outstanding at three years. Commendation won both Derbies and both St. Legers; Veilmond won the A.J.C. and Victorian St. Legers and was second in both Derbies; Agrion won the N.Z. Derby; and Mask the Great Northern St. Leger. Mr Currie also has a half-brother to that great racehorse, Thespian, who defeated Gloaming in the Islington Plate in which he ran the mile in 1.36 3-5. This yearling is also sired by Limond. Among the fillies is an own sister to Honour, iwnner of the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate and the N.Z. Derby. Mr Currie has no fewer than eleven yearlings by Limond in his draft for the National Sales this year. Among these are also included a colt from the English mare, Mirabelle, and fillies from the English mares Joanax and Jewel of Asia. Anklet has a brown colt by Limond; Episode a chestnut colt by Pombal, the half-brother to Limond; Rose Queen, a brown filly by Limond; Makepeace, a brown filly by Pombal; Damaris, a brown filly by the same sire; and that lovely type of brood mare, Motley, a bay filly also by Pombal. Bronze has a most interesting and very attractive filly in a chestnut by Lysander. The Koatanui draft not only includes a record number of yearlings by Limond but it is the largest draft yet sent down from this stud.

The yearling sales this year have much to interest prospective buyers as in addition to the many magnificently related yearlings from the Wanganui studs the South Island will be very strongly represented. From the Ataahua and Gladstone Park Studs there will come a record number of Night Raids. Among these is a magnificent brown colt from Entreaty, which ranks as a full brother to Phar Lap. This is an early foal and many judges who have inspected him state that he takes very much after his famous relative. Mr Kain has Night Raid colts out of Satisfaction, Full Swing and Receipt, and fillies by this sire from Monoxide and Moiselle and a Diacquenod colt from Spangle. Spangle is an own sister to Marsa, the dam of Nightmarch, and Full Swing is a half-sister to the famous Melbourne Cup winner. Moiselle’s filly is a full sister to Night Lad. Hunting Song will also have a fine representation this year.' Included will be an own sister to View Halloa and an own brother to Aladdin.

Mr S. J. Gibbons has a Hunting Song colt out of Martianette, the dam of Martian Chief. This is the only yearling Mr Gibbons has th s year from this family as both Oratress and Wingbag did not produce at the stud last year. A fresh addition at the sales this year will be a draft of yearlings from the Auckland Stud Co. sired by Whirlwind, the first of whose stock are appearing this year. Whirlwind is by Galloper Light and is from a very successful mare from the famous Sunshine strain which has already produced in New Zealand both Martian and Limcnd. Another fresh draft will be fivev colts sired by Lord Quex, Hunting Song and Gainscourt on account of Mr Ralph Holden, who last year established in Hawke’s Bay the Mana Stud at Te Mahanga. Amongst Mr Holden’s yearlings is included a bay colt by Lord Quex from Polonaise, the dam of Gay Court.
