TAIHAPE

SCHOOL AFFAIRS. The Taihapc School Committee met on Monday evening, Mr. E. Loader presiding over a satisfactory attendance. The secretary was instructed to write to the Wanganui Education Board, inquiring if the Education Department wits taking any action in regard to the remodelling of the Technical High School at Taihape. The following visiting committee was appointed for the months: —Rev. H. Harris, Messrs. W. Jurgens, E. Loader. The headmaster reported that arrangements in connection with the school ball to-morrow (Thursday) evening had been finalised. He stressed the fact that the main hall had been reserved for the children till 10 p.m. and no adults were allowed in the auditorium till that hour. Ample seating accommodation would be provided for adults on the stage and in the dress circle, but the seats in the main hall were required exclusively for the use of the children. The children reported that the dental clinic dance at Mataroa on Saturday evening resulted in a profit of £l2. The committee expressed high appreciation of the efforts of Rev. Father Doolaghty in organising the dance and the secretary was instructed to send him a letter of thanks. In his monthly report the headmaster (Mr. A. H. Denne), stated that the attendance during the last two weeks had been very low, and had brought down the average attendance for the term, below that required to keep the school in its present grade. A determined effort would be necessary from now on to bring the attendance back again to normal. The chairman remarked that the school would go down a grade unless the attendance was maintained at a certain standard. If the school were reduced a grade this would in all probability mean a reduction in the staff, so he appealed to parents not to keep their children away from school unless it was absolutely essential, owing to sickness or some other cause.
