MAGISTRATE'S DECISION 1 Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 13. A fine of £lO and costs was imposed on .lack Whitton, aged 24, who pleaded guilty to-day to a charge of bookmaking. 'Pho police said that accused had i been betting at the Brighton trots last Saturday. Tho magistrate (Mr Alosley) said: “ Phe Chief Justice has made some remarks concerning tho duties of magistrates in these cases. However, one has one’s own duties to carry out to tho best of one’s ability, utterly regardless of what people may think. If 1. were to allow myself to be undulv influenced by the Chief Justice I would send this man to gao l I'do not propose to do that. This man has not been convicted before, has not even been charged before, and is only in a small wav of business ”
