“Mud-larking” is a new seaside sport gaining extraordinary popularity at Weston-Super-Mare, Somersetshire, though still in its infancy as yet. Young people may be seen running across the shingle and diving into the mud. No one flounders; everyone is graceful (states an English writer). This is the formula. You choose a nice oozy area of mud; you take a little run and then dive like a swallow. If you are lucky you will glide. If you aren’t—you just flounder. It’s all in the game. Mud-larking is a “mixed” sport. You can’t, in fact, distinguish the sexes, everyone becomes so plastered with mud. Girls are taking to the mud mainly because it is good for the complexion; men because it is invigorating. Mud-bathing is very health-giving, a medical man says, as the sort of mud you get here contains iodine and other tonic agents. It will be a good thing if the sport catches on elsewhere.
