WILL FACE CHARGES
DR. SCHACHT’S SPEECH MINISTER’S SHARP REPLY GERMAN FINANCIAL CRISIS (Times Cable) Received Oct. 13, 9.5 p.m. BERLIN, Oct. 12. Though Dr Schacht’s movements since his Harzburg speech are not disclosed, it is denied that he has gone to Italy. He telephoned Berlin that he was returning to face any charges. The Finance Minister, Herr Dietrich, sharply replying to Dr Schacht, says it is untrue that the Reichsbank has been used to conceal the insolvency of the public finances. The Reichsbank has not lent one reich or a single penny. It is true that a few municipalities are in difficulties, but only 2000 to 3000 are affected out of a total of 55,000 throughout Germany. It is also true that foreign indebtedness appears greater than the published figures, but the details are not available. Dr Schacht’s speech might well deprive Germany of her remaining credit. The country’s gravest danger lies in nervousness and alarmist utterances which have injured the nation’s credit.
