WANGANUI ASSOCIATION MEETING OF DELEGATES ANNUAL REPORT FOR SEASON . The annual general meeting of delegates to the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association will be held in the Wanganui Education Board’s ofiico on Tuesday, October 13, at 7.45 p.m. The following is the annual report to be presented for the season 1930-31: The committee feels that the past season has been a most successful one, both from a tennis and financial point of view, when the economic conditions ruling are taken into consideration. Membership.—During the season the Putiki Club re-joined the association, making the number of affiliated clubs thirteen. The total of affiliated players shows a decrease on the previous season. Finances. —The season opened with a balance of £6l 8s lid. in general account and £lB5 15s 4d in ground levy account, and closed with balances of £B5 9s 2d and P.O. account, £197 0s 8d respectively. The finances are therefore in a sound condition. Annual Tournament.—The annual tournament was held on the Wanganui Club’s courts on January 1,2, 3, and 5. Players from Auckland, Wellington and other centres participated, the tennis generally being of a high standard. The net profit amounted to £55 12s. To the ladies who undertook the catering arrangements, and to those gentlemen who assisted at the tourna ment, the committee tenders grateful thanks. The various events resulted as follows: Championships Men’s singles, M. L. Lampe; ladies’ singles, Mrs C. Smith; men’s doubles, A. L. Steadman and N. R. C. Wilson; ladies’ doubles, Mrs C. Smith and Miss M. Purcell; combined doubles, N. R. C. Wilson and Miss S. Todd; men’s singles A, V. Latham; men’s singles B, I. H. Keith; ladies’ singles, Miss T. Grieves; men’s doubles, G. Gordon and R. Sincock; ladies’ doubles, Mrs Dempsey and Miss T. Cox; combined doubles, K. McFarlane and Miss Bethwaite. Junior Tennis.—lt is regretted that the N.Z. Junior Hard Court Championships were not and it is hoped that this event will be revived during the coming season. The Association held its annual junior tournament last November, a good entry being received and the different events keenly contested. Residential Championships.—From a good entry, the winners of the various events were as follows: — Men’s Singles.—M. L. Lampe, St. John’s? Ladies’ Singles.—Mrs. C. Smith, St. St. John’s. Men’s (Doubles.—H. Cox and L. Udy, John’s. Ladies’ Doubles. —Mrs. C. Smith and Miss M. Purcell, St. John’s. Combined Doubles. —Mrs. C. Smith and M. L. Lampe, St. John’s. Inter-Association Matches. —Three inter-Association matches were played during the season, resulting as follows: Against Taranaki, at Wanganui. Won 18 matches to 6 matches. Against Manawatu, at Palmerston N. Won 13 matches to 11 matches. Against Wairarapa, at Wanganui. Won 18 matches to 6 matches. By defeating Manawatu, the Wanganui representatives regained the Christie Cup. The following players represented Wanganui in the different fixtures. —N. B. Barkman, H. Cox D. W. Earle, N. Hay Campbell, M. L. Lampe, S. Powdrell, J. Powdrell, L. Udy, A. L. Wheeler, Miss P. Best, Mrs. J. Dempsey, Miss J. Izard, Miss M. Latham, Mrs. Partridge, Miss M. Purcell, Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. C. Smith. Inter-club matches. —Keen interest was shown in the B and C grades, but no challenges were received for the A grade cup. The grade trophies are now held as follows: A. grade.—St. John’s. B. grade.—Gonville. C. grade.—Hunterville. Congratulations are extended to Mrs. E. W’ellwood (nee Miss Myers), partnered with Mrs. W. J. Melody (Wellington), on winning the N.Z. Ladies’ Championship Doubles. Valedictory.—During the season, Wanganui had the misfortune to lose the services of Miss Myers (now Mrs. Wellwood). That loss was felt, not only by players, but also by many other sections of the public. She left Wanganui to take up residence in tho Wairarapa district, and prior to departure the Association made her a small presentation on the St. John’s Club’s courts, as a token of its appreciation and esteem. Thanks.—The thanks of the association are tendered to the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Club for the very generous manner in which they have placed their courts at the. disposal of the association on various occasions during tho season; also to the Wanganui East Lawn Tennis Club for the use of their courts and for assistance given in connection with the junior tournament. The committee desires to express its appreciation of the assistance of the press in forwarding the interests of the game during the season.
