Caught unawares, tho two occupants of a wooden house at 147 Vivian Street, had to eseapp through a window on to a verandah when thev discovered the building ablaze early this morning. The Fire Brigade, which received the at 2.28 p.m.. was quickly on the sroiv, and effected tho rescue of the two poonlo by means of ladders. The building was well alight when tho brigade arrived, and owing to a, ■strong wind some difficulty was evperienced in attacking the flames. Tho adjoining house. No. 145. wr« also alight, but the brigade made a rood save, and prevented any serious damage. No. 147. however, which ww owned bv the Downes Estate, and occupied b*’ George 8. Groves, suffered extensively.
