HARRIERS

WANGANUI CLUB % RACE FOR TROPHY WIN FOR PEMBERTHY Running in splendid style J. Pernberthy won the trophy presented foi competition among the members of the Wanganui Harrier Club by Mr Boland Young on Saturday afternoon. Off a handicap of Bmin. 30sec. he cleared out for home and came in some two min-.itei ahead of G. Johnston, who was the second man to reach the tape. Competition was keen throughout the race and the excellent handicapping provided an interesting finish. This wa? noted especially by the fact that, excluding Pemberthy, the first twentytwo runners arrived home within two minutes. This gave the timekeepers a pretty busy time but they were able to cope with the << rush’ , and acquitted, themselves well. Starting from the Aramoho Boating Club the field of 35, which was sent off at intervals in accordance with the handicaps, made for the Jubilee Hqme. From that point the course deviated from Delhi Avenue to the property of Mr. Oldacre. Tho rifle range was then the objective of the runners. Before the road was reached again Mr Roland Young’s property was crossed and. the finishing point was reached via Roberta Avenue and Brunswick Road. The course was about 5| miles, of which 4} miles w:is road work. The nature of the country was chosen with an eye to the coming road race from Wangaehu to Wanganui. The conditions were not of the best, the paddocks being heavy with the rain of Saturday morning. At times the runners were knee deep in water. Credit is due to Pemberthy for his run, which was exceptional for a youngster. He out-distanced his comarker, E. Vincent, who finished seventh. G. Johnston made a fast journey and kept up his reputation. Weller ran in third and gained fastest time. This embryo’champion is in the best of condition and seems as hardy as ever. C. Granville gained one of the best positions he had taken this season by coming in fourth. Off the 8-minute mark he ran exceptionally well and covered the remaining stages of the journey with plenty of heart. A. McKay, off 3min. 40sec., showed that his form has improved lately and that he has picked up in condition. He should be good for the road race. E. Carde maintained his reputation for steadiness and ran consistently with his , past performances, while K. Law also ran to form. Perhaps a littb more leniency could have been shown to members off the 11-minute mark, but with that exception the handicapping was good throughout, as will be seen by a glance at tho positions taken with the in parentheses, as follows:
