CHARITY CUPS’ RUGBY

KAIERAU S VICTORY OLD BOYS’ JUNIOR CUP SATURDAY’S TWO MATCHES Kaierau won the Senior Charity Cup on Saturday in conclusive fashion, defeating Technical Old Boys by 17 points to nil. Wanganui and Old. Boys carried off the Junior Charity Cup and were lucky to do so. A drop-kicked goal in the last quarter of a min ute gave them victory by a point, a thing which would not happen twice in a hundred matches.

THE SENIOR CONTEST

VICTORY TO THE BEST SIDE. Technical Old Boys, without Bert Delves, and ono or two others, failed to achieve championship standard against Kaierau. Tho maroons dominated tho play for tho whole of tho first spell, scoring 14 points. The wind was factor in establishing that superiority, but a review of tho match as a whole indicates that it was really of minor importance. After half-time, Technical Old Boys made strenuous efforts to emulate tho form shown in the deciding match of the senior championship, but could not do it. Tho wind aided them a little, but the handicap they could not compete with was the maroon van. Matters were decidedly more even in the second round, but at no time through the match did the blues and whites look like winner* Kaierau atttacked in tho opening stages, Rayner playing his backs into action and Mutimer made a cut through. Trying to elude Renz, he was tackled and the defenders cleared. H. Firmin got through a few minutes later, but dallied too long with his to Lockett and Dennis cleared. A long kick to Renz from Morgan resulted in a miss-field, and Lockett, following up fast, got his man. Charles got possession and transferred to Pleasants, who scored the first try the match. Simpson’s kick failed. —Kaierau 3; Technical Old Boys 0. A few minutes later North ran right through the opposition and never had a hand laid on him. Ho scored under tho bar, Simpson adding the points Kaierau 8; Technical Old Boys 0. Tho Kaierau backs handled again, and North came round to accept a second pass and was supported by Morgan, the last-named making a run to score determinedly. The kick failed.— Kaierau 11, Technical Old Boys 0. Kaierau proved relentless and North got away again to show up the weak tackling. Morgan accepted his pass again and scored. Simpson’s kick failed. —Kaierau 14, Technical Old Boys 0. x - Technical Old Boys attacked for the first time and came very close to a try, the referee awarding a five-yard scrum. At half-time, however, Kaierau still had a 14-point lead. Technical Old Boys had the wind in the second spell and attacked immediately. the forwards using their feet to good effect in the tight and loose. Kaierau had to force twice in quick succession. Dennis was placed at second five-eighths after half time and Reid at first, Weir going to the centre position. A kick put the ball out at the corner flag, but the Kaierau defence held and was able to exploit the position when Peake’s pass to Reid did not connect. By giving their backs a good share of the ball, Kaierau were able to get back to an attacking role, a five-yard scrum getting down near the corner flag. The blue and white defence was equalto the occasion, how’ever, and following a hot few minutes on the line Metekingi broke and reached Simpson, well over half way. The maroon custodian’s tackle was of the right order, but the blue and whites were back on tho attack. Brisco made a run and centred, Rayner’s clearing kick finding touch near the corner. Kaierau were compelled to force, following the throw-in. The maroons asserted superiority in the van again and there followed a series of attacks by the maroon backs, which a determined defence kept at bay. Dennis was carried off injured and the blue and whites carried on with fourteen men for a time. Wilson got tho ball out of the tight to Pleasants, who scored his second try of the day. The kick failed.— Kaierau 17; Technical Old Boys 0. The match continued, with Kaierau fully equal to the somewhat lifeless blue and white attacks and the final score was: KAIERAU 17 TECHNICAL OLD BOYS 0 Mr J. Richardson was the referee. Tho teams were: Kaierau (maroon): Simpson, Moore, Mutimer, Stowers, J. Morgan, North, Rayner, Lockett (capt.), Wellwood. Pleasants, 11. Firmin, W. Firmin, Wilson, Charles, Tasker. Technical Old Boys (blue and white): Renz, Brisco, Dennis. Mctekingi, Weir, Reid (capt.), Peck. Durie, Bellvo, Marshall, Burrell, Stewart, Aitcheson, Thompson, Signal.

ONE POINT MARGIN

THE JUNIOR CONTEST Tho match between Old Boys’ juniors and Technical College firsts for tho Junior Charity Cup resolved itself into a battle royal between the College backs and the opposing van. Old Boys fielded the better pack, and as a result, had tho better of the game territorially. Weak tackling had a lot to do in tho establishment of a try for College and it is quite probable that bad the College backs been given a greater share of the ball they would have won. The first spell ended with what honours there were going to Old Boys. There was no score and tho merits of the sides had to be judged from a territorial aspect. In doing that, ono had to pay due regard to a very staunth Collego defence in which the fullback p’ayed a fine part. Tho second spell erave honours to College. They *»aw more of the ball in the becks, and kept the reds on defence most of the time until towards tho end of tho game. Takarangi, playing halfback for Col lege, scored a fine try, getting the ball from tho scrum and racing over on his own. The kick at goal was not successful. 3, Old Boys F As time wore on the prospects of a
