LORD BEAVERBROOK’S RETURN

J ORD BEAVERBROOK is to return from Canada to London

The tremendous fact is telegraphed all over the Englishspeaking world. Why? Lord Beaverbrook, it is whispered, may be returning because of England’s financial condition. Doubtless, Mr Montague Norman being ill, and Mr Ramsay MacDonald being in Scotland, the crowds in the London streets stopped and bethought themselves, “Can such things be? Can the pulsating heart of the Empire continue to throb with Lord Beaverbrook absent as well?” Little imagination is needed to visualise the financiers troubled, the stock brokers trembling, merchants in a state of nervous collapse, and the Treasury officials prostrate because at the present time Lord Beaverbrook is not in London! Why has not the Royal Navy been commissioned to hasten with all speed to New York to bring Lord Beaverbrook back to London? Why have not special trains been commissioned to speed him on his way? The Empire must be going to pieces! Think of what Lord Beaverbrook has done! He played small dog and hung round the heels of Mr Bonar Law; he was the go-between with Mr Lloyd George and the Conservative Party before Mr Lloyd George became Premier; he was elevated to the House of Lords, and never made a speech for years and years; he started, stopped, disbanded, started and stopped again, his Empire Crusade, and he has run the Daily Express on scaremonger lines. Whieh was the least of these crimes is bard to decide, but there seems to be no evidence in these endeavours to justify the suggestion that the world’s financial centre would miss him for one single minute. England will be a glorious memory when Britain turns to her Beaverbrook for financial leadershin.
