DISCOVERY BY POLICE THE WELLINGTON HOLD-UPS AN EARLY MORNING ARREST <Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. In the course of his investigations in connection with the reported hold-ups, which have occurred in the suburbs ot V ellington during the past week, Detective McLennan and Constable Scarry arrested two men at Petone at 10 o ’clock last night on a charge of attempted breaking and entering. Detective McLennan communicated with tho Detective Office at Wellington, and as a result of certain information which he supplied, DetectiveSergeant Tricklebank, accompanied by Detective Jarrold, Kane, and Ritchie, went to Abel Smith Street, where they arrested at 3 a.m. a third man on a charge of breaking and entering and theft.

When tho man’s lodgings were subsequently searched the detectives found a mask, an automatic pistol, ammunition, and two bludgeons.

Leslie Gordon Clarke, aged 22, and Sidney John Hodge, 35, were charged in the Police Court at Petone with attempted breaking and entering on July 31 of the Self-help Co-op Store, Jackson Street, with intent to commit theft. They were remanded to appear at Wellington on August 22. William Edward Brown, cabinet maker, 27, appeared before. Mr E. Page. S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded until August 27 on a charge of breaking ana entering the warehouse of the Saracen Shoe Company and stealing goods valued at £64.
