RACING AT RICCARTON

GRAND NATIONAL FIELDS FBOSPECTS FOR FINAL DAY (By “KESTREL.") There will be racing again to-day at Riccarton, when the Grand National meeting will be concluded, and with fairly good fields engaged in the various event** another good day’s racing should be provided. The fact that the number of acceptors in the majority of the races runs into double figures is a matter for congratulation so far as the Canterbury Jockey Club is concerned. and it will also add much interest to the day’s racing. In the opening event, the Aylesbury Steeplechase, eight stand their ground, and a trio that may be found occupying attention at the finish are Tararoa. Thurina and Umtali. Croupier scored so honestly in the Cashmere Plate on Tuesday that the tupweight will carry a good deal of support for the Longbeach Handicap. Strong opposition may be furnished by Full Crop and the improving Babel. Prince Lu has been accounted unlucky so far at Riccarton but he may mak»- amends in the Sydenham Hurdles, for which Conjuror IL and Landmark are also worthy of support. Among the class represented by the nine engaged in the Etyx Hurdles Aladdin still stands out in spite of his big impost. Apache may trouble him and Gueress will not be neglected. The ’chasers will be seen in action when the Lincoln Steeplechase comes np for decision. This may resolve itself into a Grand National battle over again, with Snowfall and Paris playing the leading parts. Dark Prince has only to stand up to prove dangerous to the pair named. Run over eight furlongs as it i«. the Heathcote Handicap has a smack of of the Winter Cup about it. but the field is not so large nor so classy. From this distance it would appear that three to be worthy of support are Kanelagh, Compris and Shatter. The Redcliffs Handicap field is so large that the element of luck will play a large part in the running. With anything like a recent passage Spearfnl. Martian Chief and Water Power appear likely to prove worthy of support. The meeting will he concluded with the Selwyn Handicap, for which some of the Winter < up contestants are engaged. It will he interesting to see bow they fare over a furlong shorter than the opening day’s task. Mahors. Charmeuse and On Top are a trio that will be favoured, but it should not be forgotten that Historic is rapidly get ting bark to his best form and may surprise. The starting times for the various e .rents to-day are as follows: Aylesbury Steeples 11.31 Longbeach Handicap .. .. 12.11 Sydenham Hurdles 12.51 Styx Hurdles LH Lincoln Steeples ” Heathcot?
