FLOOD DAMAGE
IN MANAWATU COUNTY PALMERSTON N., Aug. 12. That tho recent floods in the Manawatu River have not been unattended with damage to the inundated areas in tho Manawatu County was revealed in the report which the engineer (Mr Bond) placed before the nieetin; of the Council yesterday, the report being as ■ollows: —“During tho past four weeks several roads have been inundated with storm water during the period of conlinuous rain which fell throughout the district. Several of the old wooden culverts have collapsed and others proved quite inadequate to take the flow of water. It has been necessary to renew several culverts with concrete pipes. In some areas it is quite impossible to improve the drainage unless fairly large schemes arc undertaken by the settlers concerned in conjunction with the Council. Whirokino Road has been blocked by flood waters from the Manawatu River throughout the month. Holes have been scoured in the road for depths up to six feet but, owing to ihe water receding, a maintenance gang is now engaged in repair work. On account of the Whirokino Road being blocked, as also was the case of the Palmerston North-Shannon Road, the Foxton-Shannon Road has been taking at times all north and south traffic and also all Whirokino Road traffic. Extra efforts have been made to maintain the Foxton-Shannon Road during the flood period, which has proved a difficult matter owing to *hc flooded state of the streams from which metal is usually procurable. In other parts of the country metal has been unobtainable for a considerably longer period than usual, but now that '\c tracks into the river pits are drying out an early start is anticipated.”
