SANSON

RUGBY FOOTBALL The game between Te Kawau and Rangitikei juniors, played at Sanson on Wednesday, proved an interesting one. The play was much below the , form shown by these teams in previous j contests. The visitors’ forwards hail , the best of the tight play and theirj . backs were more enterprising, but a, 1 bad pass or faulty handling spoiled! : most of their efforts. Barry was the! pick of the backs and Bromley, in the j forwards, was in most of the tight' work. For the home side Hehir and! Gloyn were the best, and George, Rowe i and \X r aller were prominent in the forwards. The teams to take the field were as follows: Rangitikei (Blaxik) Lewis, Bartlett, Barry, Taylor, Follas, AlcKenzic, Hodge, Alcßcth, Burnett,! Henderson, Lyne, Poppe, Hansin, Bromley and Crossley. Te Kawau (White) Alurphy, Cribb, Cribb, Smith, Hehir, Gloyn, Wright, Boswill, Sanson, Rowe, Waka, George, Heta, XVallcr and Sexton. Te Kawau set the ball rolling and] after a short period of even play, the! whites attacked. A free kick gave Gloyn a chance to goal with no result 1 The black forwards slowly worked their I way to the centre. The whites again attacked, but a free to black gave; Barry a chance to line well in the; white twenty-five, a force down following a tussle near the white line. The blacks were throwing the ball about and play for a time was in the white half. Gloyn and Cribb carried play into the visitors’ half, but a good kick sent the whites back. The whites came away again and a loose rush ended with the ball going out near the black line. Following a scramble Waller picked up and scored at the corner. Smith failed with the kick. The whites continued to press and one promising rush was nicely halted by Lewis lining out. The blacks then livened up, and took play to the white line, a force down resulting. Half-time sounded with play in neutral territory. The blacks opened, and after a spell of up and down play Barry evened the scores with a penalty. After an exchange of kicks the black backs started a rush, Barry putting in a nice run to hand on to Taylor, who crossed at the corner. Barry did not add the extra points. The blacks continued to press, good runs by Barry and Bartlett taking play to the white twenty-five. George gained some ground, but the blacks continued to press. Taylor had a shot at goal from a penalty with no result. Tight play in the white twentyfive followed, Gloyn at last finding the line at the contre. The whites opened up their play, but the handling was faulty and a scoring chance was lost. A free to black saw Barry find the line at the white twenty-five. Blacks pressed hard, George, with his kicking, sending them back. A free to white took play to the black half, but Boswill failed to take a return and play came back to the centre. Hansen came through the ruck, but Hehir found the line. Waka got away and was halted at the b’aek twenty-five. A free to, black saw Barry again line out well n the white half. From a loose scramble Heta secured and sent out a long pass to Smith, who shook off a couple of tacklers and finally was pushed out near the black line. M. Rowe secured from the line-out and dived over the line. Gloyn missed with the kick. The game
