REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY

TO-MORROW S MATCH HOME TEAM DEFECTIONS PLAYER FOR ISLAND MATCH Bullock-Douglas, the Wanganui rep resentative wing three-quarter, has been chosen as reserve for the North Island team which is assembling in Wellington to-day, preparatory to the match against the (South Island to-morrow. There will be many in this district who would be pleased to see a game, notwithstanding the fact that his absence will seriously deplete the Wanganui side which is to face Canterbury here to-morrow. 11. Blyth (Old Boys), owing to injuries, is unable to be reserve back for to-morrow’s team and his place is-be-ing filled by 11. Lowe (Pirates). Very satisfactory practices have been held two nights a week since the representative players have been sorted out and Taiuru and Downs, of Rangitikei, attended yesterday. The remaining outside Union members of the team arrive in Wanganui to-day. To fill BullockDouglas’ position the selector endeavoured to include Haami (Wainui-a-Rua), and telephonic communication with Mr -Monk last night ensured that this player will arrive by up-river boat at mid-day to-day. It was thought that Dennis would act capably as winger, but owing to an injured ankle it is doubtful whether Narbey will be able to take the field, in which case the Technical Old Boys’ player will go in at centre. As matters stand now the Wanganui team will take the field as follows: Delves Haami Narbcy Downs’ R. Potaka J. Morgan | J. Duncan Waldin Glenn Lockett I Taiuru Mclntyre Heise Charles Tasker Reserves: (backs), Dennis and H. Lowe; (forwards), Friend and Agnew. Canterbury Visitors. The Canterbury touring side arrived yesterday afternoon and were quartered at the Imperial Hotel. Last night members of the party were the guests of the Putiki Maoris at a dance at Aotea Hall. The function was most enjoyable and several items -were interspersed with, the dance programme. The Canterbury team takes the field to-morrow as follows: A. W. Roberts. W. Brown Innes Dunshea i Hazelhurst (Ist) McPhail I Mullan Crockett K. Brown Sweeney Foley P. Roberts Hooker Pease Quaid Reserves: Vincent (back), Crofts (forward). RATANA ROSE BOWL DEFENDERS HOLD TROPHY The Ratana junior Rose Bowl, held

by the Ngaruahine Maori team, was contested at Manaia Domain on Wednesday, the Waitotara team being the challengers. By a score of 21 to 3 the holders retained the trophy. Their combination was much better and their speedier backs with their good passing rushes were too much for the challengers to resist. The match was played in pouring rain and was refereed by -Mr K. McNae. The teams were:— Ngaruahine.—T. Tutahione; W. Toroa. J’. R’ei, P. Katene; T. Robinson, T. Rei; W. King, I. Awahou, 11. Heneri, I. Katene, R. Hikaka, Ruru Sam, R. Manaua, W. Henry, T. Tarnou. Waitotara.—K. Broughton; Gray, Huiroa, Dingo; D. Broughton, J. August; R. Broughton; Sturmcy, C. Broughton, G. Canterbury, K. Canterbury, P. Broughton, T. Broughton, T. Tamou, Murphy. The defenders started a good rush, T. Robinson and J. Rei participating. They were followed, and after a sharp struggle W. Toroa scored in the corner. Ruru Sam was unable to convert. Ngaruahine again carried play to the lino by a series of sharp rushes, but Sam’s failure to take the pass enabled Waitotara to relieve. Waitotara made good progress with rushes and kicking, but play was returned by Heneri’s kicking. I. Rei picked up and handed to W. Toroa, who made a brilliant run along the side-line, dodged and evaded all pursuers and ran round to score behind the posts. R. Hikaka goaled. Waitotara worked to the twenty-five and gave the defenders some trouble, but smart back work, passing and kicking brought, the game out of danger for Ngaruahine. A further attack on their line was successfully resisted by the holders. The Waitotara backs got going from a serum and made a likely opening, but a wild forward pass ended the rush. From a mark Waitotara attempted a shot at goal, but the ball was charged down by the opposing front-rankers. From a free kick Waitotara again failed to goal, and at half- ' time, the holders had a lead of 8 to nil. The holders were favoured by the wind and rain behind them in the second spell. Waitotara made a dangerous attack on the corner, but by T. Robinson’s cutting-in he was able to put the ball into touch. The home team were ‘ kept on the defensive and kept themselves out of trouble by a succession . of kicks. Waitotara made a determined attack in the corner and were on the point of scoring when T. Rei kicked the ball over the dead-ball line. 1 Ngaruahine carried play back to the other end, Awahou scoring from a ‘ scramble. T. Robinson failed to con- J vert. An excellent passing run was 1 opened by T. Rei, who handed on to Awahou, T. Robinson, W. King and J. : Rei, the last named making a brisk run and scoring. Rliru Sam failed with • the kick. Toroa made a great single < handed run, kicked and followed up ' well to tackle his opponent. Ruru Sam appealed to the gallery with one of J his aggressive rushes in which he I brushed his tacklers aside like flies, passed out the ball, and caught, it up < himself and got nearly to the corner. I A dashing onslaught was made by two Ngaruahine players, the Waitotara fullback making an excellent save with a short kick. From a free-kick Canter- 1 bury kicked a penalty goal for Waitotara. T. Robinson responded with a brilliant drop-kick. A sparkling passing rush was made by the challengers. 1 carrying play to the corner, but the ' movement remained uncompleted. Katene made the final try for the home • team, but failed to convert. Ngaruahine 21 J Waitotara, 3
