" General.—During the past four weeks several roads have been inundated with storm water, during the periods of rain which fell throughout the district Several old wooden culverts collapsed and others proved inadequate to take the flow of water. It has been necessary to review several culverts . with concrete pipes. In some areas it .is quite impossible to improve the drainage unless fairly large schemes are undertaken bv the settlers concerned _ in conjunction with the council. Whirokino Road has been blocked throughout the month. Holes have been scoured in the road for depths up to _ six feet. but. owing to the water receding, a maintenance gang is now engaged in repair work and the road probably opens for trafll • bv Wednesday. On account of the Whirokino Road being blocked and also t'. Palmerston NorthShannon Road, all north and south traf tie has been using the Foxton-Shannon Road. Extra effort was made to maintain the Foxton-Shnnnon Road, but it was a difficult matter owing to the flooded state of the streams from which metal is usually procurable. Tn other parts of the county it is hoped now that the tracks to the pits arc drying to make an early start.
